Description
The story of Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is a famous piece of literature from the Enlightenment period. Goethe spent over sixty years writing this masterpiece, and it was divided into two parts with the second part being published after his death in 1832. It is considered Germany's most important contribution to world literature. The story is based on legends surrounding a sorcerer from the sixteenth century and Marlowe's play Dr. Faustus. However, Goethe's version explores the balance between knowledge and experience, where Faust sells his soul not only for magical powers but also for a heightened sense of life.
Part One of the dramatic poem tells the story of Faust's pact with Mephistopheles and his seduction of an innocent girl named Gretchen. Part Two incorporates various influences, such as theology, mythology, philosophy, politics, music, and literature, to tell the story of Faust's life at court, his romance with Helen of Troy, and his eventual salvation. This edition features the renowned translation by Bayard Taylor.
