He wants a job where he can work and feel useful, and he finds one at the Limberlost Swamp in Indiana. He works hard to protect the valuable wood there, and he begins to love the natural world around him. While working, he meets a girl who is kind and gentle and likes to take pictures of animals. Freckles falls in love with her, but he thinks he is not good enough for her. However, he gets a chance to show her his true worth.
