Text-Based Writing, Grade 6

Scaffolded text-based writing and reading comprehension lessons are designed to help improve the reading and writing skills of grade 6 students. These lessons focus on essential nonfiction writing forms such as compare and contrast, sequence, explanatory, informative, cause and effect, opinion, and argument.

There are a total of 12 leveled nonfiction texts included in this resource, ranging from levels V to Y. These texts cover a variety of topics including biographies, health articles, science articles, and social studies articles.

The units in this resource provide guidance for reading comprehension and include pre-writing tasks to prepare students for completing text-dependent writing prompts. Each unit begins with a unit focus and lesson checklist to help guide students through the learning path.

Some of the features included in each unit are directed reading strategies, a dictionary page that introduces content words, close reading of a leveled nonfiction article, text-dependent comprehension questions, a graphic organizer to help students organize information from the article, and a text-dependent writing prompt.

Additional resources and features for teachers include texts across the curriculum ranging from reading levels V to Y, a suggested teaching path to help pace the lesson and provide scaffolded instruction, a student rubric focusing on the 6 traits of writing, a vocabulary and definitions list, and a lesson objective and content-area concept for each unit.

This resource is a revised edition and replaces the previous resource Text-Based Writing: Nonfiction. It includes updates to the content.
