Description

Reverends Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young and Fred Shuttlesworth are important figures associated with the Birmingham campaign of the civil rights movement. Local residents also played a vital role and risked their lives for the cause. Myrna Carter Jackson proudly holds a police record from protesting the harsh treatment of African Americans in the city. Carolyn Walker Williams, who experienced the injustice faced by blacks in East Birmingham from a young age, was arrested for protesting while still in school. Gerald Wren grew up in the Smithfield neighborhood, which was tragically nicknamed Dynamite Hill due to the bombings of black homes, churches, and schools. Author Nick Patterson interviews some of Birmingham's brave activists and recounts the tough challenges they overcame.
