Box-Car Children, The
Description
Four orphans - Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny - find an empty boxcar and make it their home. They learn to take care of themselves and work hard. They also have lots of exciting adventures. One day, Violet gets sick, and they have to find a doctor to help her, even though that means they might lose their independence.
Gertrude Chandler Warner read this story to her students and changed it many times to make it fun to read. The Box-Car Children was such a hit that she wrote 18 more books in the series. Warner said that some librarians were upset because the children were having too much fun without any grown-ups. But that's why kids loved it!
The Box-Car Children is one of the top 100 chapter books of all time, according to a survey in School Library Journal. It's also one of the top 100 books for children, chosen by the National Education Association.
