Once, during the new year's toast of the knights of King Arthur's Round Table, a huge stranger wearing green armor suddenly enters and issues a challenging task. The stranger claims that any knight can chop off his head provided he can receive the same blow from the Green Knight after a year. Only Sir Gawain, a brave, loyal knight, accepts the challenge. The story follows Sir Gawain's journey in fulfilling his promise. This medieval English literature piece combines paganistic and Christian values, ultimately celebrating forgiveness and serving as a chivalric masterpiece. This edition presents the story in two versions, translated by scholar Jessie Weston, in prose and in verse.
