In January of 1866, Fisk University was established in Nashville, Tennessee. At that time, the Southern region struggled to recover from the Civil War, and black people faced obstacles even after being freed from slavery. Fisk faced financial difficulties within five years of its opening, and it was at risk of shutting down. In order to raise money for the university, Professor George L. White and nine students performed in a musical group called the Jubilee Singers. They toured the country and gained popularity, even performing for President Ulysses S. Grant. The money they earned saved Fisk University from closing down. Today, Fisk is a well-equipped institution known for its academic excellence and celebrated alumni.
