Description

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a story set in southern Mississippi during the Great Depression, focusing on the struggles of an African-American family. The protagonist, Cassie, is a young girl who belongs to the Logan family. Despite owning their own farm land, the Logans face the constant threat of losing it.


Cassie grapples with the harsh reality of racial inequality in their town, bearing witness to the prejudice and racism her family and others endure on a daily basis. Living in the South during this time is fraught with danger, as many families, including Cassie's, struggle to make ends meet and remain burdened by debt. They are forced to shop at the Wallace Store, whose owners perpetrate unimaginable violence against them.


In an act of defiance, the Logan family, risking their own safety and well-being, strive to bring about change in their community. As Cassie matures, she begins to personally experience the injustice that plagues her people.
