The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories told by a group of men and women from all walks of life, on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas à Becket at Canterbury. Three popular tales and the General Prologue are featured in this edition: The Knight's Tale, The Miller's Prologue and Tale, and The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale. The stories, originally written in the 14th century, are recast into modern verse, capturing the lively spirit of the originals with Chaucer's humor and characterization. Description

At the Tabard Inn in Southwark in the London of the late 1300s a group of men and women from all walks of life gathered to start a journey to the shrine of Thomas à Becket at Canterbury. To make the trip less boring, the host of the inn suggested that each of the travelers tell a favorite story. He promised that the best storyteller would be treated to a fine dinner on the group's return to Southwark.

So begins one of the earliest masterpieces of English literature - a collection of stories cherished as much for the portraits of its storytellers as for the stories they tell. These portraits reveal much about the rich social fabric of 14th-century England. This edition includes three of the most popular tales, and the charming General Prologue - The Knight's Tale, The Miller's Prologue and Tale, and The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale.

The stories are animated by Chaucer's sly humor, flair for characterization, and wise humanity. They have been transformed into modern verse that captures the lively spirit of the originals. The tales are highly entertaining and represent an excellent introduction to the rest of The Canterbury Tales and to the pleasures of medieval poetry in general. This edition is a selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
