Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and Other Puritan Sermons
Description
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is a sermon that was preached by Jonathan Edwards to his Enfield Connecticut congregation in July 1741, during the Great Awakening. It is known for using vivid descriptions of the torments of Hell and humanity's natural depravity, while also appealing to man's need for salvation and reminding them of the agonies that awaited the unreformed.
While some regarded it as the greatest ever given on American soil, others attacked it as puritanical fire and brimstone. Regardless, it made a lasting impact on American Christianity.
This volume includes sermons by ten other influential Puritans from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, such as Thomas Shepard's The Parable of the Ten Virgins, Cotton Mather's An Hortatory and Necessary Address, and John Cotton's The Way of Life. It will serve as primary source material for many American history and literature courses.
