The SpellingYouSee program is a homeschool spelling curriculum that has seven levels based on the developmental stages of language. Dr. Karen Holinga developed the program to help students develop their spelling skills naturally and at their own pace with the guidance of their instructor. The program relies on visual memory that's built through repeated reading and writing, and students learn spelling through short daily activities that integrate copywork, reading, speaking, and listening instead of relying on memorization for weekly tests.
Spelling You See Level B: Jack and Jill is designed to move students from the Phonetic Stage into the third developmental stage - Skill Development. The level is suitable for developing readers who print easily with lowercase letters and who know most letter sounds, including long and short vowels. When determining placement, there are questions to ask that include whether the student can focus on a worksheet for at least 10 minutes, write comfortably, give the sounds for most letters, including both long and short vowel sounds, and is beginning to read.
Jack and Jill will provide practice in writing individual letters and in hearing the sounds they make in simple words. It will also provide opportunities for students to study words in the context of nursery rhymes by marking letter patterns, copying words and passages, and writing from dictation. The course requires teacher instruction, and the Jack and Jill Student Workbook Set (sold separately) cannot be completed without this instructor's handbook.
The instructor's handbook features the philosophy and overview for the program, frequently asked questions, as well as short instructions for each lesson and a Guide to Chunking. This is followed by passages for dictation, daily dictation lists (organized by lesson), and general dictation lists needed for students to complete their work. A line-listed answer key is also provided. The program is 72 pages with a glossary, softcover, and measures 9.25 x 8.
