Stone Fox is a story about a boy named Willy who must make sacrifices to save his Grandfather's farm. Willy lives on a potato farm with his Grandfather and their dog, Searchlight. Grandfather enjoys playing tricks on Willy.
One day, Grandfather becomes bedridden and will not get out of bed. Willy calls for a doctor, who examines Grandfather and determines that there is nothing physically wrong with him, but he has lost his will to live.
Later, a tax collector visits the farm and informs Willy that they will lose their home if they cannot come up with $500. Since they are unable to secure a bank loan, Willy decides to use his college fund to enter the National Dogsled Race, which offers a prize of exactly $500.
In order to win the race, Willy and Searchlight face numerous challenges along the way. They must compete against Stone Fox, a renowned dog sledder who has never lost a race. Willy realizes that he may need to make one final sacrifice in order to secure victory.
