     In the year 1934, times are difficult for Trip's family after the closure of the mill in their small town in Wisconsin. This unfortunate event leaves Trip's father without a job. Determined to provide for his family, he decides to move them all to Alaska to become pioneers as part of President Roosevelt's Palmer Colony project. While Trip and her family are adjusting to their new surroundings, her mother is hesitant due to the lack of civilization. However, Trip feels as if she is following in the footsteps of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and she comes up with a plan to raise enough money to convince her musically talented mother that Alaska is a wonderful and cultured place to call home.
