Nancy and her friends George and Bess are coming back from a country carnival when they see a big explosion and fire at a beautiful mansion. They are worried that people might be stuck inside the burning building, so they hurry to help. But they end up facing a mysterious problem that seems impossible to solve.
The first clue they find is a diary that someone left behind, but it's hard to read because the handwriting is strange. There are also confusing drawings and chemical formulas in the diary. Nancy wonders who dropped the diary near the burning house. Was it the thin stranger she saw running away from the fire? What was he doing there? And does he know where Felix Raybolt is? Felix is a dishonest person who sells patents, and no one has seen him since his house burned down. Did he die in the fire?
As more evidence points towards Joe Swenson, who was cheated by Foxy Felix, Nancy tries her best to prove that the inventor is innocent of starting the fire. She does this because Joe has a little daughter who is very important to him.
