In 1095, the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I asked for help from western European Christian states against the Turks. The Turks had taken over the Empire after the Byzantine defeat at Manzikert in 1071. This book is about the First Crusade (1096-1099). It tells the story of several armies of 'armed pilgrims' who marched across Europe to the Holy Land. These armies were set loose on a divided and fragmented Islamic world and achieved a series of seemingly miraculous victories. They even captured the Holy City of Jerusalem. However, the success of the First Crusade was never repeated. It led to two centuries of bitter warfare, with lasting effects that are still felt today.
