Description

Miquon Math is a math curriculum designed for students in Grades 1-3. This program allows children to actively explore math concepts through movement and hands-on activities. The program consists of six student books and three teacher support books, which are sold separately. It is essential to purchase Cuisenaire rods separately, which provide a physical and visual connection to math concepts.

The Purple Book: Level 6 is the second of two books for third grade. It includes lab sheets, which are workbook pages that teach math through creative exploration using hands-on manipulatives. Activities guide students through the learning process, introducing and reinforcing concepts through touch, sight, movement, and mental engagement. This approach creates an environment where active minds are encouraged and leads to a greater level of comprehension from the start. Teachers can also pace lessons according to the student, and topics can be covered out of order. Students can move as quickly or as slowly as necessary.

The Purple Book covers various skills, including subtraction, fractions, multiplication, division, equalities and inequalities, place value, squaring, graphing equations, grid and arrow games, clock arithmetic, sets, and word problems.

Lore Rasmussen developed Miquon Math during her time as a remedial math teacher at the Miquon School during the 1950s. Miquon Math asserts that teaching math to young children cannot only be done through verbal teaching. Rather, it should be a doing, discovering, and puzzling-out situation in which children are guided to pose questions and answer them in a variety of ways.

Most people find Miquon Math sufficient as a core math curriculum for Grades 1-3, although some parents may choose to use additional supplemental materials to ensure comprehensive coverage or provide additional practice on specific topics. Please note that no instructions are provided, and while some lab sheets are self-explanatory, some are not. The Lab Sheet Annotations Book is considered to be a necessary resource in order to teach this course.
