Description

Miquon Math is a math curriculum designed for Grades 1-3. This hands-on program encourages students to explore math concepts through movement and physical activities. It consists of six student books, two for each grade, and three teacher support books, each sold separately. To use this program, you will also need Cuisenaire rods, which provide a physical and visual connection to math concepts.

The Red Book: Level 2 is the second book for first grade, after The Orange Book and before The Blue Book, both of which are not included. It includes lab sheets, which are workbook pages that teach math through creative exploration using hands-on materials. Activities guide students through the learning process by introducing and reinforcing concepts using touch, sight, movement, and mental engagement. This unique approach creates an environment where students are encouraged to actively engage with the material, improving comprehension. Teachers can also adjust the pace of lessons according to the student's needs.

The Red Book covers many specific math skills, including odd-even, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, division, equalities and inequalities, and factoring. Miquon Math was developed in the 1950s by author Lore Rasmussen during her time as a remedial math teacher at the Miquon School. The program emphasizes the idea that teaching math to young children should involve doing, discovering, and puzzling-out situations in which children are guided to pose questions and answer them in a variety of ways.

Most parents find Miquon Math to be sufficient as a core math curriculum for Grades 1-3. However, some parents may choose to supplement the program with additional materials to ensure comprehensive coverage or provide additional practice on specific topics. Please note that while some of the lab sheets are self-explanatory, some are not, and no instructions are provided. Therefore, the Lab Sheet Annotations Book is considered to be a necessary resource in order to teach this course.
