Description

In 1941, the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama, was chosen as the site for a groundbreaking development in military training. For the very first time, black Americans were granted the opportunity to serve their country as members of the United States Army Air Corps.



Over the course of five years, almost 1,000 African-American pilots called the Tuskegee Army Air Field home. Additionally, more than 10,000 black men and women provided vital support as personnel for the 99th Fighter Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group, and the 477th Bombardment Group. Their unparalleled accomplishments, both domestically and overseas, shattered stereotypes and played a pivotal role in the eventual integration of the United States military.
