Wordly Wise 3000 uses a contextual approach to teach students how to approach unfamiliar words. Students learn to identify similarities to known words, use the word in context, break it down into parts, and finally, look it up. The series features 3,000 carefully selected words from literature, textbooks, and SAT-prep books. Each lesson in Book 3 starts with a Word List that includes pronunciations, parts of speech, concise definitions, and the words used in interesting contextual sentences. The book consists of 15 lessons, each containing 10 words. In Book 3, vocabulary instruction becomes more sophisticated while still preparing students for content-area learning. Lessons focus on vocabulary building, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Comprehension of vocabulary is reinforced through five different exercises repeated in each lesson, along with strategies for reading first and Greek and Latin roots. The third edition retains the word lists from the second edition but updates the passages and questions, assigning measures from The Lexile Framework for Reading. Please note that the 3rd Edition is not compatible with 2nd Edition teacher's guides and resources. Wordly Wise 3000 Book 3 contains 15 lessons with 150 words.
