How to Make Homeschooling Fun
Homeschooling is a great opportunity to find creative ways for your child to learn. Every child learns in a different way. When I first started homeschooling, my daughter was 4 years old. My main goal was to create a love for learning for her. I wanted her to be excited about learning new concepts of reading, math, and science! So I started finding creative and fun ways to teach her math and reading. We would go outside and count the houses in our neighborhood to help her practice counting 1-20. Or we would do a scavenger hunt around the house to find sight words to help with reading. I noticed that our homeschool days started to become easier, the more I found fun ways to teach my daughter. So now let’s talk about ways you can also make homeschooling fun.
5 Ways to Make Homeschooling Fun
1.Trips to the Library
Homeschooling at the library has been a family favorite. It’s a great opportunity to learn in a different environment. Some libraries offer study rooms and/or a children’s section. Also, I love that some libraries have story time for younger kids and free seasonal activities. I’ve found so many books at the library that have helped with our weekly learning lessons.
2.Learning Games
Learning games have been a great way to introduce new math and reading concepts for my kids. There are lots of learning games you can create on your own. For example, to help my daughter learn site words, I would write and cut out the words and tape them around the house. This was a fun way for us to have a scavenger hunt for site words. As my daughter got older and our family grew, it was helpful to have an online site like Boundless Homeschool where I can browse different learning games for all my kids by subject, grade and specific resource. I’ve found so many fun learning games on the Boundless Homeschool online store!
3.Join a Homeschool Co-Op
A homeschool co-op is a group of homeschool families that meet on certain days to learn together and/or do field trips. This is a great way for your kids to socialize with other homeschool families. Having a supportive homeschool community is so important. We’ve been involved in several homeschool co-ops and the groups make learning exciting for my kids.
4.Get Outside
During the warmer months, we do a lot of our homeschool days outside in our backyard or at a local park. Getting fresh air and having my kids run around always puts my kids in a good mood for learning. On the days we do homeschooling at the parks, I have my kids help with preparing our lunches. I think there’s always simple opportunities for kids to learn even if it’s practicing preparing lunches for the day.
5.Extracurricular Activities
Incorporating weekly extra curricular activities such as sports, clubs and community service, is a great way for your kids to socialize and learn a new skill. As a homeschool family, most of the time we have flexible schedules so there’s opportunities to be involved in various activities throughout the day. I love that some extracurricular activities offer discounts for homeschool families. Homeschool learning is not only the basic subjects. It’s also important to have your kid’s learning new skills such as coding, swimming, baking, gymnastics or other skills they are interested in.
As you navigate your homeschool journey, I encourage you get creative in how your teach your kids. The beauty of homeschooling is that we can customize our kid’s learning making for a great educational experience. Boundless Homeschool has been a great resource for my family. The educational learning games have helped my kids learn new math, reading, and STEM concepts!
