Pond by Jim LaMarche: A Picture Book to Enjoy with Your Child
“The joy of the seasons, the wonder of discovery, and respect for the natural world is at the heart of this inspiring book…” Pond is a beautifully illustrated story that will delight anyone who treasures the outdoors. The following questions might help you discuss it with your child.
- Examine the cover. What do you notice? Can you guess what the story might be about?
- Let’s read the story. Notice the illustrations.
- Are there some things in the illustrations that are not told in the story? Do you think the illustrations help to tell the story?
- How do Matt, Pablo, and Katie use their talents in the cleanup and restoration of the pond?
- In two of the illustrations, Katie wears a feather necklace. Why do you think the artist added that detail?
- When Matt, Katie, and Pablo told Dad about the old wooden boat, Dad said, “I can’t believe it’s still there.” Can you guess how Dad knew about the boat?
- What do you notice in the two-page illustration that has no words? Does it help to tell the story? If you had to write words for the illustration, what would you write?
- Why does Matt call Katie “Miss Know-it-all Katie?”
- Matt, Katie, and Pablo say that the heart stone belongs in the pond. Do you agree? Would you have thrown it into the pond or kept it? Why or why not?
- At the end of the story, the animals and people go back to their homes. What do you think will happen next?
- With some help from their parents, Matt, Katie, and Pablo learned that they could work to clean and restore a damaged pond. What are some things you can do to help keep our environment clean?
For more stories about the natural world, please check out my picture books When I Was an Alligator and When I Was a Pelican. They feature fun language, page-turning onomatopoeia, and charming art. The informational text involves animals that inhabit our treasured coastal wetlands and the Gulf of Mexico. The back material contains questions to help you discuss the stories with your children and more information for you about the wetlands and the Gulf.
Enjoy reading to your child!
